I am so behind on new music! Remember when this blog was primarily a music blog? Things have changed - I'm much more excited to listen to my old favorites rather than taking the time to get to know new albums. I certainly don't want to keep telling you about the same albums over and over again, so I've kept quite about what I've been listening to.
Recently, though, there has been so much buzz about a few new albums, that I had to listen! Out of all the new releases in the past month or so, I have two favorites that I want to tell you about.
The North by Stars
I love this Canadian indie rock band with all my heart. Their newest release is good, especially when compared to their last attempt, The Five Ghosts, which was a little bit lackluster. This album is sweet and simple. The band's sound is maturing and evolving in the right direction.
Standout tracks: The North, Through the Mines & A Song is a Weapon
The Carpenter by The Avett Brothers
This album is upbeat, folk rock that instantly lifts my mood. On several of the tracks I can't help but tap my foot to the beat. Many of the songs are stories that I can completely relate to, so this album was good upon first listen, but also something my ears craved to hear again.
Standout tracks: Live and Die, I Never Knew You & Pretty Girl From Michigan
More new albums that I've liked: Paper Moon by Paper Moon, Sun by Cat Power, Coexist by The xx
New releases that I listened to but didn't love: The Sound of the Life of the Mind by Ben Folds Five, Mirage Rock by Band of Horses
Albums I am counting down to: Push & Shove by No Doubt, A Great Big Pile of Leaves new LP
What new music are you loving right now?

I'm having the opposite reaction to The North. I find I can't get into it, whereas I got into The Five Ghosts right away. I feel like there aren't any stand out tracks on the new one. I'll keep listening and hope I get into it.
ReplyDeleteAnother of my favourite Canadian bands just released a new album this Tuesday - Mother Mother. It's a lot darker, in sound and subject matter, than their previous releases. I'm finding it hard to connect with it, but maybe I just love their fun pop sound and this one is just challenging me as a music lover to explore their darker side.
I will say this, I LOVE the album art because it is of Habitat '67 - a structure built as part of expo 67 in Montreal. It's one of my favourite architectural landmarks and i got to see it with my own eyes a few years ago (from across the river).
DeleteI liiike. :)
ReplyDeleteyes yes yes stars is my life, thank you for posting about them too!
ReplyDeleteI first heard "Live and Die" on the radio a couple of days ago, and I was so instantly hooked that I nearly went off the road as I fumbled for my cell phone so I could Shazam it and figure out what it was.
